UC Irvine has cut its men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s rowing, and sailing programs as a result of the economic downturn and the state budget crunch in California.

With additional reductions in operating expenses, the total budget impact is expected to be up to $1 million.

After the cuts, UC Irvine will sponsor 18 sports (nine for men and nine for women).

“These were extremely difficult decisions that unfortunately had to be made due to the financial crisis that is affecting our state and the UC system,” said Athletics Director Mike Izzi. “I was hoping to avoid discontinuing any of our sports programs, but the athletics department is not immune to the cuts that are occurring in the state and on our campus.”

The school will honor all 2009-10 scholarships for student-athletes who wish to remain at UC Irvine. The athletics department staff will assist those who wish to transfer.
