Michigan’s governing board will vote Thursday on an athletics department plant to build a 50,000-square-foot training and practice facility for the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The center will be adjacent to the school’s Crisler Arena.

Early plans call for a $23.2 million facility housing two practice courts, locker rooms, a video theater, strength and conditioning area, sports medicine and office space. Donations and athletics department funding are expected to fund the building.

Renovations to the arena will continue. No timeline was announced.

“This is a major step forward in improving our basketball facilities,” said Athletics Director Bill Martin. “The facility will allow our student-athletes to practice later in the day, giving them more flexibility in scheduling their academic classes.”

Men’s basketball coach John Beilein and women’s basketball coach Kevin Borseth both appreciate the commitment to their programs.

“The goal of our program is to create an environment that will foster what’s best for the development of the student-athlete and their success, both on the court and in the classroom,” Borseth said. “This facility and everything that it will bring to our program will help us achieve those goals. Everything surrounding our basketball program, including scheduling, player/coach working relationships, player development and recruitment, will benefit from this addition.”
