More than 2,600 fans watched Marist beat Manhattan, 70-44, January 30 and raise $1,881 for breast cancer research in the process.

Joan Pagones, the supervisor of the Town of Fishkill, New York, and a two-time breast cancer survivor, was one of many survivors recognized at halftime of the game. Marist AD Dennis Murray honored Pagones, who served as the Red Foxes’ honorary coach.

“The crowd was awesome tonight,” said junior forward Rachele Fitz, who became Marist’s all-time leading scorer in the second half. “I’m happy so many people came out to support breast cancer and support us, because we knew this was a big game against Manhattan.”

The money raised through raffles and a $100 donation from DRA Imaging will benefit the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, based in LaGrangeville, New York.

“The Marist community is so generous to allow us to gain exposure and be the beneficiaries of the money raised tonight,” said Cathy Varunok, a co-founder of Miles of Hope. “Their neighbors in their backyard are being helped by our foundation.”
