LSU’s Leon Landry, Nicholas Pontiff and Micah Gibbs each hit a grand slam home run in a 22-10 victory over Illinois last week, tying an NCAA record for grand slams in a single game. The Tigers hit seven home runs in the contest at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.

The grand-slam record was achieved on eight previous occasions, most recently by Southeast Missouri State on March 28, 2007. LSU, ranked fourth in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll, now holds the Southeastern Conference record for most grand slams in a single game. The Tigers’ convincing victory came after a 3-1 loss to Illinois the night before that snapped a nine game winning streak.

“I was really proud of our kids,” said head coach Paul Mainieri. “I think they came out really determined to make amends for yesterday.”
