LSU downs Texas in baseball finale

When Paul Mainieri was hired in June 2006, the goal was to return LSU to the top of college baseball.

The Tigers accomplished the mission in three seasons by defeating Texas, 11-4, in the last game of the best-of-three final in Rosenblatt Stadium Wednesday night. The victory gave the Tigers their sixth NCAA title and first since 2000.

“I’ve dreamt my whole life of having this moment,” Mainieri said. “It’s almost surreal. My first thoughts are with this wonderful university and with this state and its tenacious people. This championship is for them.”

The Tigers, 56-17, broke open a tie game with a five-run sixth inning, and relievers Chris Jones and Louis Coleman kept Texas’ offense at bay.

The Longhorns, 50-16-1, forced the winner-take-all Game 3 by downing LSU, 5-1, on Tuesday. After falling behind 4-0 in the final game, Texas rallied to tie the score by the fifth inning. Kevin Keyes’ two-run homer keyed the comeback.

Texas, which has also won six CWS titles, left 12 runners on base in the final game.

LSU, which won the first game of the final series, 7-6, in 11 innings, began its decisive rally the next inning.

CWS Most Outstanding Player Jared Mitchell led off with a walk. Mikie Mahtook doubled to right center, driving in Mitchell as the Tigers reclaimed the lead. An error and sacrifice fly scored Mahtook. A walk and two hit batsman made the score 7-4, and Sean Ochinko’s two-run single capped the scoring.

Ochinko went 4-for-5 in the game, including a home run. Mitchell, who also plays wide receiver on the football team, was a catalyst for LSU the entire series, and his three-run homer in the top of first staked the Tigers to a 3-0 lead.

Overall in Omaha, Mitchell hit .347 with two home runs, seven runs batted in, two doubles and a triple.

“If there is a better way to end this season, write a story for me,” said Mitchell, who was also a member of LSU’s 2007 BCS national championship football team. “It’s been so much fun to accomplish something like this with these players.”

Mainieri gave Coleman the honor of closing out the game. The LSU senior pitcher struck out the side in the ninth to set off LSU’s celebration.
