George Washington eliminated its men’s and women’s diving teams, effective immediately. Athletics Director Jack Kvancz said the move will allow the school to concentrate its resources on the swimming programs.

"Clearly the downturn played a role, but this is something we've been discussing for a while," Kvancz told the Associated Press. "Maybe that was enough to shove us over the fence."

Student-athletes receiving athletics aid who choose to remain at the school will continue to receive aid through graduation. According to the George Washington Web site, only one male and one female student-athlete competed in the sport in the 2008-09 season. Both were sophomores.

The diving team competed in the Atlantic-10 Conference championships February 18-21.
