Florida International will name its new football practice facility after university trustee R. Kirk Landon, who donated $1 million to the school’s football program.

The 50,000-square-foot R. Kirk Landon Football Fieldhouse will open this fall, anchored by a weight room that will be used by all Golden Panther student-athletes.

“This is just the latest example of Mr. Landon’s contributions to FIU and its athletics programs,” said Athletics Director Pete Garcia. “His leadership and financial support have helped us take FIU to Division I status and build a successful athletics program.”

In addition to the 14,000-square-foot weight room, the facility will include an equipment room, training room, ticket office, merchandise area, locker rooms and an athletics hall of fame in the reception area. Coaches will have offices, a team meeting room and several smaller meeting rooms.

Landon’s donation to the football program is not his first gift to the school. In 2004, his $5 million contribution created the R. Kirk Landon Undergraduate School of Business. Landon was chief executive of American Bankers Insurance until 1995 and chair of its board until his retirement in 1999. He has been involved with Florida International since serving on the advisory board and founders councils in 1972.
