Ducks roll to first indoor track championship

The NCAA News

A pretty good year for Galen Rupp and Oregon just got a whole lot better at the Division I Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Rupp, who led the Ducks to their second straight cross country team championship last fall while claiming an individual trophy for himself, collected three more titles and helped Oregon put another big prize in its trophy case in an 18-point victory over Florida.

The senior became the first man to win the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs and also anchor a distance medley team to victory as the Ducks collected their first indoor team track trophy. Ashton Eaton added a heptathlon title and Rupp’s fellow Olympian and DMR teammate, Andrew Wheating, finished second in the 800-meter run as the threesome contributed directly to 48 of Oregon’s 54 points.

"It was a great day, a big day for the Ducks," said Oregon Associate Athletics Director Vin Lananna, who added his first indoor coaching victory to a resume that includes six cross country championships at Stanford and Oregon, as well as a men’s outdoor track and field title at Stanford.

"(The men) had a chance to do something really special at this meet and executed the plan the coaching staff developed just about as well as they could have.”

Rupp sparked the rout with his 5,000-meter win on the first night of competition, in which, just as in last fall’s cross country championships, he pulled away from Liberty’s Sam Chelanga near the end for the victory.

“I was focusing on that race,” Rupp said. “I knew I had to get it done, and execute my race and get a championship.”

Wheating set up Rupp for the anchor leg of the distance relay, putting the Ducks into second place in the race heading into the last leg. Then Rupp, who had to talk Lananna into letting him go after the victory rather than save himself for the next day, managed to outsprint Arkansas’ Dorian Ulrey through the last lap for the win.

“We have two choices at a meet like this – go big or don’t do it at all,” Lananna said after the first night of competition. “Today we had the kind of personnel to make exciting things happen.”

Rupp’s win the next day in the 3,000 meters was almost anticlimactic, as Eaton’s heptathlon victory and Wheating’s showing in the 800 already had clinched the team title. But Rupp still was impressive, winning the race by 5 1/2 seconds.

He said it was worth the effort.

“I figured it was my last indoor meet in college, so I might as well go out strong and go for it. I might hurt tomorrow, but I’m on an adrenaline kick right now.”

Florida edged cross-state rival Florida State for second place in team competition during the March 13-14 meet at Texas A&M, helped by Christian Taylor’s win in the triple jump. It was the Gators’ second runner-up finish in five years. LSU finished fourth.

Defending team champion Arizona State’s Ryan Whiting was the only repeat individual titlist this year, claiming another shot put crown.

In the meet’s other relay, Baylor extended its dominance in the 1,600-meter event, winning the race for the third straight year and the ninth time since its first victory in 1990. The Bears have won five straight 1,600-meter relay championships in Division I indoor and outdoor championships.

One of the Baylor relay squad members, Trey Harts, also won the 200-meter dash.
