The NCAA News

Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of May 4-8:

•         Academic performance as measured by the APR is improving, especially in football, baseball and men’s basketball, sports that traditionally showed lackluster academic improvement. It was, however, the first year that teams were eligible for postseason bans for sustained poor academic performance, and at least two teams will serve such a penalty in 2009-10.

•         Three new presidents were appointed to the Division I Board of Directors: Judy Genshaft of South Florida, William Meehan of Jacksonville State and William Harvey of Hampton.

•         Washington cut its men’s and women’s swimming programs due to budget constraints. The change leaves five men’s and eight women’s swimming programs in the Pacific-10 and Washington with 21 sponsored sports.

•         Former Syracuse student-athlete and Silver Anniversary Award winner David Bing was elected mayor of Detroit. A prominent Detroit businessman and humanitarian, Bing won his first race for elected office.
