The NCAA News

Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of April 20-24.

•         More than 750 teams were recognized for earning Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of their sport. The teams recognized for high academic performance represent 11.8 percent of the 6,484 teams that compete in Division I.

•         The Legislative Council decided to shorten the amount of time a men’s basketball student-athlete can “test the waters” in the professional NBA draft. If the legislation is adopted by the Board of Directors on April 30, men’s basketball players will have to remove their name from the draft by May 8 next year in order to retain collegiate eligibility.

•         The Legislative Council also added Division I sand volleyball as an emerging sport for women. Division II added the sport at the 2009 NCAA Convention. Both divisions will work on playing rules and other policies for the sport before the August 2010 effective date.

•         The Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet is seeking input on current coaching limits and athletics personnel, one of the cabinet’s top priorities. The cabinet is concerned about the proliferation of non-coaching personnel with sport-specific responsibilities.
