The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of January 26-30.

•         South Florida hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers all week, allowing the Super Bowl contenders use of the Bulls facilities in preparation for the February 1 game. The school painted Steelers logos on its fields and in its locker rooms, and officials hope to raise the institution’s profile.

•         An on-ice incident at a Michigan-Michigan State men’s ice hockey game, followed by a confrontation in the Michigan State locker room, prompted both schools to send a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated. Two Michigan State student-athletes were suspended for the remainder of the season, and Michigan will review its security policies at games. Respond to this story on the Double-A Zone.

•         Big West teams began competing in women’s water polo, the 18th conference-sponsored sport. Conference play begins in March.

•         The Academic Cabinet will review recommendations about at-risk student-athletes and make further comments on legislation in the 2008-09 cycle. The group meets February 2-3.
