Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of December 7-11.

  • The ranks of African-American head football coaches in Division I grew by five in recent weeks, with Charlie Strong accepting the job at Louisville, Nigel Burton moving to Portland State, Mike London taking over at Virginia, Willie Taggart going to Western Kentucky and Larry Porter assuming the job at Memphis.
  • In partnership with the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, the NCAA will award a $100,000 research grant to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
  • North Carolina won its 20th women’s soccer title, beating Stanford, 1-0, on December 6. The Tar Heels’ Jessica McDonald scored the game’s only goal just three minutes into the matchup.
