The NCAA News

Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of November 9-13.

  • New Orleans announced it is investigating the feasibility of reclassifying to Division III. The university is struggling to come back to full sport sponsorship in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and devastating budget cuts as a result of the recession. The school will announce a decision by May 15, 2010.
  • Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim won his 800th game this week, becoming the eighth men’s coach to reach the milestone. The Orange beat Albany, 75-43, November 9.
  • A highly ranked Division III Wooster men’s basketball team hosted Division I Kent State in an exhibition game November 7 to raise money for a memorial fund for the son of Wooster assistant coach Doug Cline. Division I teams visiting Division III institutions is rare, even for exhibition play, and Kent State had to obtain a special waiver to make the trip. Kent State coach Geno Ford is a longtime friend Cline, who lost his 3-year-old son Corey in a car accident last February.
