The NCAA News

Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of October 19-23.

  • The Division I Board of Directors will consider a set of recruiting reforms in men’s basketball that would curb compensatory relationships with people associated with prospects and suspend coaches who violate those rules. The Board will meet October 29 to discuss the package
  • Division I institutions began to moderate their spending slightly, the latest revenues and expenses report revealed, and the gap between the “haves” and “have-nots” – though still wide – is not growing as quickly.
  • The Division I Legislative Council reviewed each proposal in the 2009-10 cycle, supporting No. 2009-48, which would reduce “oversigning” in the Football Bowl Subdivision, and No. 2009-64, which would create parameters for nontraditional courses used for initial-eligibility purposes.
  • Hawaii women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji earned his 1,000th career victory October 17 when the Rainbow Wahine beat New Mexico State, 3-1. Shoji began his head coaching career in Hawaii in 1975, and he has accumulated three national titles to date.
