The NCAA News

Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of September 14-18

  • The Academic Cabinet will focus on high school core course grade-point average as an area for further study for changes in the initial-eligibility standards. Research indicates GPA is the best predictor of future collegiate success.
  • The Division I Legislative Council will examine legislation modifying media guide production and requiring sickle cell testing for all incoming student-athletes at its October 19-20 meeting in Indianapolis.
  • The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference will add North Carolina Central as its 13th member beginning July 1, 2010. The MEAC announced earlier this year its intent to expand, with the hope of adding at least one more school in the near future.
  • The Emerald Bowl announced new ties with Army, Navy and the Western Athletic Conference. The bowl’s ties with the ACC expire after the next season.
