Division I rewind

Following is a summary of Division I news from the week of June 22-26.

  • The bats at the Men’s College World Series were tested for compression for the first time, and the data gathered from the testing will guide the Baseball Rules Committee in its discussions about how to curb the practice. Softball has faced similar issues for some time, and one bat manufacturer has created a softball bat that delaminates when its performance exceeds proscribed standards.
  • LSU beat Texas in the College World Series, bringing the Tigers back into the winner’s circle for the first time since 2000.
  • The Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Cabinet will sponsor a series of proposals in the 2009-10 legislative cycle designed to address concerns about coaching limits and the role of non-coaching personnel.
  • The Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee hopes to grow the sport through increased television exposure and quality championship events.
