The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of June 8-12.

  • Francis Allen, who coached men’s gymnastics at Nebraska for more than 40 years, retired last week. Allen spoke with The NCAA News about his career what he sees for NCAA gymnastics in the future.
  • Fordham announced it will offer football scholarships beginning in 2010. The decision makes the Rams ineligible for Patriot League championships and the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The league plans to discuss the implications of adding football scholarships for all its members.
  • Members of an Iraqi girls basketball team participated in Pat Summitt’s basketball camps this week. The team also visited Tennessee tourist spots and spent time in Washington D.C.
  • The Tennessee legislature honored former members of the Tennessee State basketball team who played with the Harlem Globetrotters.
