The Division I Leadership Council will continue to study membership requirements for Division I institutions and also will review the Task Force on Commercial Activities report at its March 24 meeting in Indianapolis.

The Council will begin to develop new membership requirements by identifying priorities from a working document the group discussed in January that includes an emphasis on success in the classroom in addition to on the fields and courts.

The review of membership requirements began at the behest of the Division I Board of Directors, which installed a four-year moratorium on new members beginning in August 2007. The Leadership Council, formed with the reorganization of the governance structure last summer, was charged with crafting appropriate, updated membership standards.

Also on the Council’s agenda is a further review of commercialism. In addition to a detailed review of the task force report, the group will hear from Greg Shaheen, NCAA senior vice president for basketball and business strategies. Shaheen will give a more detailed framework for discussion, and Council members will help identify a strategy for review of commercialism issues within the governance structure.

In other business, the Council will review legislation still in the 2008-09 cycle and offer comment on relevant items. The Legislative Council will vote on proposals for the last time in April.
