An outbreak of the H1N1 virus (swine flu) at Delaware forced the school to cancel baseball, softball, track and field and rowing events set for this weekend.  A baseball student-athlete was one of four confirmed cases of swine flu diagnosed on campus. Several other students are ill with flu-like symptoms believed to be H1N1.

The baseball and softball teams were both set to travel for series this weekend. None of the games will be rescheduled. The softball team was set to travel to Hofstra for its final regular season contests. The cancellation means Hofstra clinches the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title and will host the conference championship May 6-8.

The Delaware Open track meet was cancelled, and the rowing team will not participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro Championships. That competition will continue as scheduled.

The school also cancelled admissions tours, theater and dance performances, awards ceremonies, a film festival and social events. The school’s ice arenas, museums and some dining areas are closed through May 4.
