Campbell’s softball team took to a North Carolina diamond November 7 to raise money for teammate Amanda Littlejohn, a former starting catcher who is fighting cancer for the second time at her family home in California.

The team hosted a “Play for the Cure” donation clinic, passing on their knowledge to more than 50 girls for three hours. The clinic raised $1,615 through the support of the community, private donations and camper fees. The money will be donated to help Littlejohn and her family with medical expenses.

Littlejohn was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2007 but fought the disease while continuing to play for the Camels during 2008. That year, she had a .367 batting average, 84 hits, 15 home runs and a school-record 72 RBIs. Campbell made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years.

Littlejohn’s cancer was in remission until November 2008 when she learned that a malignant tumor had been found in her brain. She returned to California to fight the disease and was again given an encouraging report this summer. But a few months later, two more malignant tumors were found in her brain. She is currently undergoing radiation treatment.

“Amanda is the inspiration of our team,” said senior first baseman Cassie Webb. “It is wonderful to see how incredible people are all around us. All the credit for the success of this event needs to go directly to Amanda, though. She is a wonderful person who has made a tremendous impact on us as players, the Campbell community, and numerous people that haven’t even had the opportunity to personally meet her.”
