Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim earned his 800th career win November 9. Boeheim’s Orange beat Albany 75-43 in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

He is the eighth men’s coach to reach the milestone, joining Bob Knight, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Phelan, Jim Calhoun and Eddie Sutton.

Boeheim said it was difficult to have to think about the looming milestone throughout the off-season, and said the team’s play in an 82-79 loss to Le Moyne brought the focus away from the milestone and back where it needed to be.

“I’d like to thank all the players and coaches who have been here over the year,” Boeheim said while addressing the crowd after the game. “I’d like to thank the fans who have been here and who make this place the best place in the country to play basketball. I guarantee you one thing, we have a little bit of work ahead of us but we’re going to give you everything we’ve got out here now and in the future.”
