The Middle Tennessee women’s basketball team auctioned off pink jerseys after its annual “Pink Zone” game against North Texas earlier this month, raising $18,320 for breast cancer. Last year, the same fundraiser brought in $18,000.

The funds will be split evenly between the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Kay Yow Fund and the Middle Tennessee Medical Center.

“We could not be more appreciative of our fans and all those in attendance Sunday who came to support a great cause by wearing pink,” Middle Tennessee Athletics Director Chris Massaro said. “This is a great example of athletics being used as a tool for a greater cause and able to help our local community.”

The Lady Raiders, who wore pink jerseys for the game, beat North Texas, 113-58, in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000. Most of the spectators stayed for an auction after the game.

“Our fans were tremendous yesterday and were a key part in our win,” Blue Raider head coach Rick Insell said. “Their commitment to help us fight cancer by purchasing the jerseys in the auction is nothing short of extraordinary and we, as a women’s basketball program, are very grateful.”
