Auburn’s swimming and diving wins one for Quick

Former First Lady Barbara Bush and Former President George Herbert Walker Bush were on hand for Friday night’s session of the Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas A&M. Auburn won the meet with a last-day rally over Texas.

Auburn scored an inspirational victory in the Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships March 28 at the Texas A&M Student Recreation Natatorium, winning its eighth team title and giving head coach Richard Quick his record 13th national crown in the sport, including his first at Auburn.

Quick, who is the first coach to win a national title at three schools (he also won seven at Stanford and five at Texas), is battling an inoperable brain tumor that was diagnosed in December 2008. Quick was not in College Station for the championships, as the Tigers were directed by assistant Brett Hawke, who has led the program since Quick’s diagnosis.

“This is just a great way to finish the meet,” Hawke said. “It's a great tribute to Richard Quick and what he means to this program. It’s a huge win for this program and was a total team effort. There’s not one person who stood out amongst us. We knew if we came out and won most of the relays, we would win the title.”

Auburn indeed won four of the five relays and set meet records in each. Texas won the other – the 800-yard freestyle – also in record fashion. The Longhorns finished second in the team standings after leading the meet going into Day 3.

The Tigers’ only other individual event win came from Kohlton Norys in the 100-yard backstroke. Norys also swam legs on two of the Tigers’ four winning relays.

Auburn Athletics Director Jay Jacobs said Quick’s accomplishments speak for themselves. “To win 13 national titles at three schools is truly remarkable,” Jacobs said. “While he was not able to be on deck, I know that the coaching staff and student-athletes felt his presence this week and dedicated their efforts to him.”

“It was a memorable senior year,” said Matt Targett, who contributed a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. “This year was a total team effort. Last year we had a few superstars, but this year we have an entire team of stars. Richard Quick was a massive part of what we accomplished. He isn’t here, but we did this for him more than for ourselves. We wanted to win his first men’s championship for him.”

Auburn, which won five consecutive titles from 2003-07, has now won six national championships in the last seven years. The eight titles are tied for fifth all-time with Stanford behind Michigan (11), Ohio State (11), Southern California (9) and Texas (9).

The Tigers entered Saturday’s finals six points behind Texas but took the lead for good after sophomore Adam Klein posted a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke and earned fourth-place points. The championships featured 11 meet records in the 18 swimming events. Interestingly, the previous records in all five individual freestyle events held up, but all the other stroke events saw new standards set.

The meet featured four double winners, including California’s Nathan Adrian, who swept the freestyle sprints; Florida’s Shaune Fraser, who won the 200-yard freestyle and set a meet record in the 200-yard butterfly; and Michigan’s Tyler Clary, who set meet marks in the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley.

Purdue diver David Boudia also won twice in the three-meter and platform events. Texas freshman Drew Livingston won the one-meter dive, while Boudia finished second.

Texas head coach Eddie Reese called the Longhorns’ first-day performance “the best first day we’ve ever had.” But he added: “It also says you better be good tomorrow morning, that’s all it says. Today’s over, it’s in the history books. To win this meet, you’ve got to swim six good sessions. We’ve got two out of the way and we’ve got four to go. I know that sounds like coach speak, but it’s simple math.”

Unfortunately for Reese and the Longhorns, the numbers added up for Auburn.
