Regional realignment was the big news coming out the Division I Women’s Soccer Committee meeting in Savannah, Georgia, earlier this month.

The committee recommended an increase from six to eight regions, with realignment ensuring that all teams within one conference belong to the same region. Although the additional regions won’t impact championship opportunities, the committee felt it was important to come in line with other Division I sports that have adopted a similar regional alignment.

One benefit of the plan is that the additional regions will increase awards from the coaches association, as more student-athletes and coaches can be recognized for their outstanding performances within a particular region.

The committee also discussed the Rating Percentages Index during the meeting and is exploring possible adjustments. While no recommendations were made at this meeting, conversations are ongoing.

Diane Turnham (Middle Tennessee State) finished her tenure as committee chair while Barry Clements (South Florida) was recommended as the new chair.
