The Big East Sports Medicine Society chose Steve Walz, assistant director of athletics for sports medicine at South Florida, as president-elect. He will serve as vice president for two years before his term as president begins.

The Big East Sports Medicine Society establishes bylaws, creates policies for athletic trainer travel, and medical policies for tournaments and championships and shares case studies on various sports medicine issues.

Walz also spoke at the NCAA Student-Athlete Development Conference last month in Orlando, discussing the use of electrocardiogram testing for student-athletes, including using the technology in pre-participation physicals and the causes and science of sudden cardiac death.

“This is an extremely exciting opportunity for me,” said Walz. “To be a part of something like this that is growing along with the other athletic trainers at the 15 Big East schools. I look forward to working with the other great people that are involved to make this successful.”
