The NCAA News

Jacquelyn Johnson’s shared a case of “déjà vu” with fans attending the Division I Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Johnson won her third straight pentathlon title Saturday -- in a manner strikingly similar to last year’s win -- and led Arizona State to an eight-point win over LSU and its second straight team title.

The Sun Devil women joined Arizona State’s men in a sweep of the men’s and women’s team championships during the competition at Arkansas.

Johnson became only the ninth woman in Division I indoor track history to win three championships in the same event -- etching her name into the records book alongside such legends as sprinter Carlette Guidry of Texas, distance runner Suzy Favor of Wisconsin and high jumper Amy Acuff of UCLA.

But she’s the first to do so solely in competition demanding excellence in multiple events.

Johnson clinched her third crown with a record total of 4,496 points, topping the six-year-old collegiate mark held by Austra Skuyte of Kansas State and the championships mark set by Georgia’s Hyleas Fountain in 2004 -- the only year that Johnson competed in but didn’t win the event.

Johnson’s victory was far from a sure thing as she lined up for the pentathlon’s final event -- the 800-meter run. She was in second place in the competition, but that was a familiar place to be in.

“I had a little bit of déjà vu, because last year I had to win by three seconds or more in the 800-meter,” she said. “I knew I could do it; it was just a matter of actually going out there and accomplishing it.

“I wasn't really thinking of winning for the third year in a row; I was more focused on beating the record."

Also like last year, Johnson wasn’t Arizona State’s only weapon at the championships, though she further boosted the Sun Devils’ cause with a fifth-place finish in the long jump.

Jessica Pressley (weight throw), Sarah Stevens (shot put) and April Kubishta (pole vault) each made major contributions with second-place finishes in their events. The Sun Devils finished third behind LSU in the meet’s last event, the 1,600-meter relay, but by that time they already had survived victories by the Tigers’ Kelly-Ann Baptiste in the 60-meter dash and Latavia Thompson in the 800-meter run to clinch the crown.

LSU’s Baptiste made some history of her own in Fayetteville, when she joined Richard Thompson of the Tiger men’s squad as the first man and woman from the same school to sweep the 60-meter dashes.

In other highlights of the meet, Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego wrote another chapter in her still-young career by repeating as 5,000-meter champion. Kipyego, who also won the 3,000-meter title last year but didn’t run in this year’s event, won last fall’s cross country championship.

Also repeating as champion in the triple jump was Stanford’s Erica McLain.

The only other meet record was recorded by Bianca Knight of Texas in the 200-meter dash. Her time of 22.40 seconds topped a four-year old mark set by Veronica Campbell of Arkansas.
