People have been subject to a lot of court television during March Madness – basketball courts, that is. Most people can remember the days when all courts had on them were lane lines and a modest center circle. Now there are huge logos, conference names, multiple three-point lines in some cases, and even the occasional advertisement.

More and more, coaches’ names are appearing on the playing surface, too. Ross Atkin of The Christian Science Monitor recently took it upon himself to find out just how many Division I schools had named their courts after an influential coach. He found 30 institutions that have honored past or present coaches by naming their home courts for them, and printing that name on the court itself.

“I’d become curious from seeing several such courts while watching televised games,” Atkin said. “I don’t guarantee that the following list is entirely accurate, but I’m guessing it’s pretty close, and any schools left off or possibly mistakenly included will probably call in to set the record straight.”

If that’s the case, e-mail us at The NCAA News (gbrown@ncaa.org), and we’ll set the record straight.
Following is Atkin’s list, by conference:

Atlantic Coast
Duke: Mike Krzyzewski
Georgia Tech: Bobby Cremins
North Carolina State: Kay Yow

Atlantic-10

(Temple has the names of John Chaney and Harry Litwack printed in the center jump circle, but the court is not named for either one of them)

Big East
Cincinnati: Ed Jucker
DePaul: Ray and Marge Meyer
Louisville: Denny Crum
Marquette: Al McGuire
Providence: Dave Gavitt

Syracuse: Jim Boeheim

Big Ten
Purdue: Gene Keady
(Indiana has Branch McCracken Court, but instead of being written on the court itself, it is noted on two plaques)

Big 12

Colorado: Sox Walseth

Kansas: James Naismith

Missouri: Norm Stewart
Oklahoma State: Eddie Sutton

Horizon League

Youngstown State: Dom Rosselli

Mountain West
New Mexico: Bob King

Ohio Valley
Austin Peay: Dave Loos

Pacific-10

Western Athletic
New Mexico State: Lou Henson
San Jose State: Walt McPherson

Note: At least two colleges have named their court for former players (Doug Collins at Illinois State and Bob Lanier at St. Bonaventure).
