The Division I Leadership Council will begin in-depth discussions of membership standards at its November 5 meeting in Indianapolis. Members identified the requirements as a top priority at the group’s inaugural meeting last summer.

In August 2007, the Division I Board of Directors instituted a moratorium on institutions beginning the provisional or reclassification membership process for a four-year period. The moratorium was intended to provide the division with the opportunity to study its membership standards and determine whether changes are needed. The matter was forwarded to the newly created Leadership Council for its analysis.

As part of its initial discussion of membership standards, Leadership Council members will review current membership requirements and reclassification requirements. The group will also learn the history of multidivisional classification dating back to the 1973 reorganization of the NCAA into three divisions. The Council will examine the membership requirements for Divisions II and III as part of its review process as well.

The Council will receive updates from the governance structure, including the work of the Legislative Council, all six cabinets and other groups. The group’s next meeting will be at the 2009 Convention in Washington, D.C.
