Hawkeyes rule wrestling roost again

The NCAA News

One of wrestling’s royalty programs reclaimed the thrown when Iowa captured the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships team title in St. Louis March 22.

It is the 21st national title for the Hawkeyes, but the first since 2000.

Sophomore Brent Metcalf (149) and senior Mark Perry (165) won individual national championships to help Iowa score 117.5 points. That comfortably outdistanced runner-up Ohio State (79).

The Hawkeyes’ lineup was so strong that the team title already was clinched before the finals session Saturday night.

It didn’t take long for Iowa coach Tom Brands to re-establish his alma mater as an elite program. Brands, who is in his second year guiding the Hawkeyes, was a three-time NCAA champion and four-time all-American at Iowa. He also won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games.

Now, Brands can add a national title to his coaching resume. He plans more success for the Hawkeyes in the future.

“This is a step in the process,” said Brands, who was named coach of the year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. “We’re going to continue this process. When our individuals prepare and wrestle their best, the team situation takes care of itself. I feel good about our program, but there is still work to do.”

Metcalf was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler after beating Penn State’s Bubba Jenkins, 14-8, in the 149-pound finals. The victory gave Metcalf a 32-match win streak and a 35-1 mark overall this season.

The fact that he wasn’t completely satisfied with his performance shows the hunger Brands has instilled throughout his team.

“I’m happy with the win, but not so much with my performance,” said Metcalf, who is the 10th Hawkeye to be named the tourney’s most outstanding wrestler. “I don’t like giving up points. I failed in wrestling on the edge, and that’s where (Jenkins) scored. I’ve got some work to do. This program is building and working toward dominance. We are going to enjoy the win, but we’ve all got work to do.”

Perry became Iowa’s 14th two-time NCAA champion when he defeated Michigan’s Eric Tannenbaum, 5-2, in the 165-pound finals. It was the fifth time that the two had met, with each wrestler owning two wins.

In the second period of the championship match, Perry re-injured his right knee, which had been operated on in January. He was able to overcome the pain and end his college career on a winning note.

“I was really excited to get another shot at (Tannenbaum) after the way I competed at the Big Ten championships,” Perry said. “I was ready to go, and I felt the best that I’ve ever felt in a NCAA final. But then my knee popped in that scramble, and it hurt worse that it did the last time. I have to credit my coaches because they got my head straight when I was panicking and told me to suck it up.”

Iowa’s other all-Americans were 125-pound junior Charlie Falck (sixth place), 133-pound sophomore Joey Slaton (second), 174-pound sophomore Jay Borschel (third), 184-pound sophomore Phillip Keddy (sixth) and senior heavyweight Matt Fields (fifth).

This is the most all-Americans Iowa has had at the NCAA tournament since 2001.

“They came not to squeak by,” Brands said. “They came to dominate.”
