Fresno State captures improbable crown

What do you call a college baseball team with 31 losses?

National champions.

The final championship on the 2007-08 calendar became one of the most improbable in NCAA history with the Fresno State Bulldogs belting their way to Men’s College World Series title in Rosenblatt Stadium on June 25.

Since the championship expanded to 64 teams in 1999, the 47-31 Bulldogs are the first No. 4 regional seed to win the MCWS. Their 31 losses are also the most for a national champion.

Men's College World Series champions 1999-2008.

Fresno State overcame the slow start to their season and put everything together in the postseason, which included winning the Western Athletic Conference just to gain access to the championship and surviving six elimination games en route to the school’s first national championship in a men’s sport.

Steve Detwiler had a performance for the ages in the third game of the championship series by driving in all six of his team’s runs in a 6-1 victory over national runner-up Georgia.

The Fresno State right fielder, who will need to undergo surgery to prepare a torn ligament in the left thumb he injured on May 6, was 4-for-4 with two home runs and a double in the winner-take-all contest.

Appropriately, Detwiler caught the last out of the game to set of Fresno State’s celebration.

“I won't be able to swing a bat for the next 12 weeks, but this was all worth it,” Detwiler said. “I just gripped it harder. I knew I didn't have much strength [in his hand], but if I swung it a little harder I'd be all right.”

The coaching staff and his teammates were very appreciative of his sacrifice for playing in pain.

“That's a kid who has been playing for us for the last two months with one thumb,” said Fresno State coach Mike Batesole, whose team tied a MCWS record by scoring 62 runs (USC 1998) in Omaha. “And I mean one thumb. The other one hangs down to his wrist when he wants it to. He's just made of heart -- it's about all he has in him.”

Fresno State survived its first elimination game in the Long Beach regional when they rebounded from a 15-1 thumping by San Diego to win 5-1 to advance to the play No. 3 national seed Arizona State.

The Bulldogs lost the first game of the best-of-three super regional on the road, but rallied to defeat the Sun Devils 8-6 and 12-9 to punch a ticket to Omaha.

Their flight to the MCWS was rerouted when bad weather popped up.

“I'll admit I thought we were going down a couple of times on that plane ride here,” said Fresno State pitcher Jason Breckley. “But it just makes everything that much sweeter with what we were able to accomplish.”

Fresno State was in position to reach the championship series until North Carolina stunned them with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning on June 21. The 4-3 loss forced Fresno State to play another elimination game, which they won 6-1.

Game 1 of the championship series saw Fresno State dealt another heartbreaking blow when a 6-3 lead turned into a 7-6 loss when Georgia score four run in the bottom of the eighth.

Georgia, 45-25-1, held a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the third in Game 2. Over the next three innings, Fresno State turned that deficit into a 15-6 lead. It went on to win the game 19-10.

Junior pitcher Justin Wilson took the ball for Game 3 and delivered a strong, allowing only one run in eight innings.

Wilson, who struck out nine while walking only one, won three games in the NCAA tournament, including two in Omaha.

“I knew it was over when I saw the look in his eye in the first inning,” Batesole said. “There was no doubt in my mind that it was over. It really didn't matter who we were playing. He was going to get it done. I knew he was going to do everything he could to bring it home.”

Detwiler put the offense on his back, and the Bulldogs were on their way to making history.

Bulldogs third baseman Tommy Mendonca was named the most outstanding player of the MCWS hitting .276 with four home runs and 11 RBI. The four home runs tied a single-MCWS record.
