Division I Rewind

Following is a summary of Division I news for the week of November 17-21.

• The five cities to host the Men’s Final Four in the years 2012-16 were announced, including North Texas’ Cowboys Stadium in 2014 and back to Indianapolis in 2015. The announcement followed a year-long selection process that included bid proposals from 10 finalist cities.

• The BCS announced a move from the Fox network to ESPN, beginning with the 2011 Bowl Championship Series games. The network paid a $500 million rights fee for the games. The NCAA’s Behind the Blue Disk series provides answers to many questions about postseason football.

• Former Cal men’s basketball coach Pete Newell died at the age of 93. Newell was one of only a few coaches to win the “trifecta” of championships: NIT title, NCAA championship and Olympic gold medal.

• North Texas journalism students helped broadcast the Sun Belt Conference’s women’s soccer championship, providing both on-air talent and production assistance for the game. The experience was positive and the North Texas students are slated to help with the conference’s softball and tennis championships in the spring.
