The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I News from the week of August 4-8.

• The settlement between the NCAA and plaintiffs in the White case was given final approval by the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Tuesday.The settlement creates greater flexibility for conferences and institutions to distribute $218 million in existing funds devoted to student-athlete benefits through 2012-13.

• The Leadership Council held its first meeting, outlining processes and procedures for future meetings, but also beginning discussions on several topics already assigned to them: diversity in the governance structure, amateurism and membership standards.

• The Board of Directors maintained its adoption of Prop. No. 2007-30-C, which prohibits men’s basketball coaches from attending nonscholastic events in April. The Board, and other supporters, believe that the legislation sends a consistent message that academics are a top priority of the Association.
