The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of July 21-25.

• The Football Academic Enhancement Working Group continued discussions about how to improve the academic performance of football student-athletes, including strategies aimed at keeping student-athletes engaged in the classroom consistently throughout their academic career.

• Delaware State softball coach Jeff Savage and former Hornets student-athlete (current NCAA intern Jessica Chrabaszcz) spoke with the Double-A Zone about the school and the opportunities for coaches and student-athletes alike.

• The Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics expressed concerns about the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program and its Academic Progress Rate. The group’s members believe that too many institutions avoid serious penalties because of adjustments and waivers, but the Division I Board of Directors and the Committee on Academic Performance stress the need to be fair and flexible in applying penalties.

• Two Dartmouth soccer student-athletes began a continuous, year-round community service project teaching sports and teamwork to elementary school students. Myra Sack and Erin Poskin spearheaded Athletes United, which has been operating for about a month.
