The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of July 14-18.

•         The Committee on Academic Performance met, opting to retain the current criteria for transfer student-athletes who wish to earn the retention point in the APR calculation. The group will wait for more data before making any more changes. The group also approved an appeals process for its most severe penalties, modeled in some ways after the infractions process.

•         The Great West Conference expanded to sponsor 14 sports at six different schools. The Elmhurst, Illinois-based league had been a football conference, but will serve as a conference home for several institutions reclassifying from Division II as they make the transition.

•         Tennessee Faculty Athletics Representative Todd Diacon wrote for InsideHigherEd.com about how different academic policies at NCAA institutions can impact the academic success of student-athletes, and, ultimately, the APR.

•         Arizona State reinstated its men’s swimming program after supporters of the sport raised enough money to keep the team afloat. The sport was one of three eliminated in Tempe two months ago. Wrestling was reinstated with support from boosters 10 days after the elimination announcement.
