The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of June 2-6.

  • The Southeastern Conference decided to sponsor legislation in the 2008-09 cycle that would increase the number of scholarships allowed for baseball student-athletes. The legislation submission deadline is June 15, and the earliest the proposal could be approved and adopted by the Board of Directors is at the 2009 Convention in January.
  • Bernadette McGlade was chosen to be the next Atlantic-10 Conference commissioner, replacing Linda Bruno, who announced her attention to retire late last year. McGlade has extensive experience as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference and also spent time at Georgia Tech. She has held several leadership positions both in the NCAA and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.
  • Georgia State announced last month that it would add other women’s sports and football. The students at Georgia State overwhelmingly approved an increase in student fees to help pay for the expansion. Athletics Director Mary McElroy talks about the decision and the plans for the future at Georgia State.
