The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of April 28-May 2.

The Basketball Academic Enhancement Group is moving toward a recommendation for summer school and more offseason access for coaches to players in an academic setting. Other items up for review include the timing of the basketball season, the transfer rate and the youth basketball culture.

After working groups for baseball and men’s basketball student-athletes, the NCAA created another group to look at the academic performance of football student-athletes. The group is expected to begin meetings this summer.

Attendance at the women’s basketball tournament games rose, especially at the first- and second- round sites. Television ratings went up as well, with the ratings for this year’s championship game increasing 30 percent from the 2007 final.

The newly formed Leadership Council is expected to review Division I membership requirements as one of its first charges. Any recommendations for changes would be implemented before the moratorium on Division I membership expires in August 2011.
