The NCAA News

The following is a summary of Division I news from the week of March 31-April 4.

  • Several Mississippi institutions were the first to receive a seal of approval from the new Center for Spectator Sports Security Management at Southern Mississippi. Receiving the seal means an institution has developed a comprehensive plan to improve security, enhance emergency response and effectively manage crowds at sporting events. The program at Southern Mississippi is the result of a $3.5 million federal grant to train universities nationwide on sports event security management.

  • The University of Texas at Austin will host the second “Conversations with Greatness” symposium Sunday, providing an opportunity for student-athletes to interact with successful minority professionals in a variety of fields. The event is co-sponsored by the Texas athletics department, The Pursuit of Dreams Foundation and Texas track and field and cross country coach Bev Kearney.

  • Several coaches reached career milestones recently, including Boston College men’s ice hockey coach Jerry York, who won his 800th game this week. York is now second on the list of men’s ice hockey coaches with the most wins.

  • Arizona’s men’s swimming team won the national championship for the first time, following the Wildcats women’s team, which took the women’s crown a week before. Arizona’s victory came on the strength of several champion relay squads.
