Division I notes: Soccer coaches hit milestones

Tim Lenahan, Northwestern’s men’s soccer coach, tallied his 200th win September 27 when the Wildcats beat Ohio State, 1-0. Sophomore Matt Eliason scored his eighth goal of the season in the 19th minute of the game, moving the Wildcats to 8-0-1 on the season and bringing Lenahan’s career record to 200-126-35. It’s the best start for the team in school history.

A day earlier, Northwestern State women’s soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell won his 100th game with the Lady Demons with a 10-0 victory over Southern. His career record afterward was 173-134-20.

Administrator inducted into Hall of Fame

Longtime Temple athletics administrator Al Shrier, believed to be the only NCAA administrator honored with a bobblehead doll in his likeness, will be inducted into Temple’s School of Communications and Theater Hall of Fame October 22.

Shrier has more than 54 years of service to Temple athletics and is considered the dean of college sports information directors. He retired officially more than 13 years ago but remains with the school as a special assistant to the athletics director.

He graduated from Temple in 1953 and was honored by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the All-American Football Foundation and the College Sports Information Directors of America throughout his career.

Georgia State’s Curry honored

Georgia State football coach Bill Curry, a former center in the NFL and with Georgia Tech, was named the 2008 recipient of the President Gerald R. Ford Legends Center Award.

The award honors a former center who made extraordinary contributions to his team and has been an exemplary citizen, philanthropist or leader in the business or football community.

Curry was named the head coach of at Georgia State earlier this year. The team will take the field for the first time in 2010. He has coaching experience in both the Southeastern and the Atlantic Coast Conferences and was a football analyst for ESPN. As a player, he spent 10 years in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Colts, Houston Oilers and Los Angeles Rams. He began his coaching career at Georgia Tech.

Curry will receive the trophy in January at the Rimington Trophy Banquet.

North Carolina’s Brandon Tate broke the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision record for most yards on kick returns over a career on his second return of the night September 27. The senior came into the game against Miami (Florida) with 3,419 kick-return yards, 36 shy of former California student-athlete Deltha O’Neal’s record. Tate finished the game with 3,467 yards off kick returns … On the same day, Colgate’s Jordan Scott broke the Football Championship Subdivision record for career carries, rushing 43 times to bring his career total to 1,153. He broke the record of 1,124 career carries, held by Sacramento State’s Charles Roberts since 2000.
