Lamar, which will resume football in 2010, will name its field after former student-athlete and longtime athletics advocate W.S. “Bud” Leonard. The honor is the result of a major gift from an anonymous donor who requested the field be named for Leonard.

Leonard enrolled at Lamar and joined the football team in 1948. He later earned three degrees from the school, met his wife, worked in university relations and development and became a lifelong supporter. He retired from the university in 1994. He was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor in 1974.

“Bud Leonard is a well-respected alumnus and retiree of Lamar University,” Lamar President James Simmons said. “Bud has a great love for football and for Lamar. As a young man, Bud played his heart out for Lamar. Throughout his career and beyond he has been devoted to this institution, its students, student athletes and alumni. I cannot think of a more fitting honor than to name this field for him.”
