Division I Notes: Delaware State bowling coach captures championship

Kim Terrell-Kearney, Delaware State’s head bowling coach, won her second U.S. Women’s Open championship earlier this month, besting Trisha Reid in the first professional title matchup of African-American athletes in the history of the sport.

     Terrell-Kearney last won the Open title in 2001. She was seeded 12th of 16 finalists. The telecast of the event will begin September 7 and continue for five weeks.

     Terrell-Kearney’s Hornets complied an 84-47 record in her first season as Delaware State’s coach. The team placed second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament, behind only Maryland-Eastern Shore, the eventual NCAA champions.

Ohio State athletics donates to library project

The Ohio State athletics department committed an additional $4 million to the renovation of the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library, bringing the total athletics donations to the project to $9 million.

     “Athletics is an integral part of Ohio State, and part of our responsibility is to advance our academics,” said Athletics Director Gene Smith. “Our commitment to excellence extends throughout campus, and supporting the library is one way our department can help provide Ohio State students – including our student-athletes – a truly world-class education.”

     Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel and his wife Ellen chair the library’s capital campaign. The renovation project will be complete in August 2009 and has a total budget of $108.7 million.

Georgetown announced the faculty for the first semester of its Sports Industry Management graduate program, including Abe Frank, the NCAA’s managing director of government relations. Officials with the NFL, MLB, NHL, USOC and other national sports groups will also serve … Fenway Park will host the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference baseball championship, not the 2009 event as originally planned. Fenway officials cited a scheduling error. The ACC is looking for an alternate venue for the 2009 championship.
