Sport sponsorship: Charleston Southern announced it would discontinue men’s tennis, effective immediately. The 2008 team finished with a 12-9 record. Athletics Director Hank Small said the decision would allow the department to “reallocate our resources to enhance the competitiveness of our remaining 16 Division I sports.” Coach Mike Baker, who also coached the women’s team, will remain on staff for that program.

Facilities: Centenary will spend more than $2 million this summer on renovations of existing facilities and new construction, including renovations to the Gold Dome arena. Tennis courts have already been resurfaced, and new softball dugouts built. Wind screens and nets for the tennis courts will also be installed. Renovations to the Gold Dome include a new wooden floor and new lower seating.

Conferences: Massachusetts and Penn State will become associate members of the Colonial Athletic Association for men’s lacrosse competition, beginning with the 2010 season. Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra and Towson already compete in the conference. Current members Sacred Heart and Robert Morris are moving to the Northeast Conference and Villanova is moving to the Big East after 2009 … Comcast and the Big Ten Network reached an agreement for one of the nation’s largest cable providers to offer the network on its basic cable package for the 2008-09 academic year. The network will move to digital cable after that. Comcast is the primary cable distributor in most of the Big Ten states. In other Big Ten Network news, the enterprise donated 100 percent of its store proceeds through June 30 to the University of Iowa’s flood relief fund. The school’s softball field and track and field complex have sustained heavy damage.

Miscellaneous: Central Florida Athletics Director Keith Tribble was named one of the 100 Black Men of America’s Chairman Award winners. The Atlanta-based organization honors outstanding leaders in several industries. Tribble was honored for his leadership in sports … Arkansas State debuted a new Web site last week, http://www.astateredwolves.com. The site unveiled its new look and began selling football season tickets. The site will continue to provide up-to-date information about Red Wolf athletics … DePaul’s McGrath Arena was recently used as a staging area for extras in the upcoming Johnny Depp film “Public Enemies.” The streets around campus were also transported back to the 1930s for the Dillinger picture. The filming took place during May … Morgan State seleted Visionary marketing Group to handle its sports marketing and corporate sponsorships becoming only the second historically black college or university to enter into such an agreement. Athletics director Floyd Kerr said the agreement will help the school tell the Morgan State story to corporate prospects and other stakeholders through sports … Temple’s football program will host the Owls for the Cure game October 21 against Ohio University. The team hopes to raise at least $25,000 for the Philadelphia affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Individuals can attend the game dressed in pink to complete a “pink out” of the stadium. Blocks of tickets are available at special prices to “Block out Breast Cancer.”
