Sport sponsorship: Murray State announced it will add softball for the 2009-10 season and discontinue rowing at the completion of the 2007-08 season due to “university cost-containment issues.” Scholarships for rowing student-athletes will be honored for the 2008-09 academic year. The school will provide full releases to any student-athlete desiring to compete at another institution.

Facilities: Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Henry Aaron Field will be outfitted with a new scoreboard this month. Brewers Charities and Time Warner Cable worked together to make the addition happen. The new scoreboard features digital wireless controls.

Conferences:  College Hockey America Commissioner R.H. “Bob” Peters will retire June 30. With his retirement, the league will separate the administration of its men’s and women’s teams. Niagara Athletics Director Ed McLaughlin will serve as interim commissioner for the men’s teams, with Alabama-Huntsville assistant sports information director Jamie Gilliam handling media relations. On the women’s side, Mercyhurst Athletics Director Craig Barnett will be interim commissioner with Wayne State assistant athletics director Jeff Weiss continuing to run media relations.

Miscellaneous: Alcorn State’s head football coach Ernest T. Jones will serve as intern with the Houston Texans from July 20-August 3. He will assist with offensive coaching during the two-week endeavor.  Jones said he looks forward to  having “another opportunity to bring exposure to Alcorn State.”
