Conferences:  The Big South Conference selected High Point to host the 2009 and 2010 conference women’s basketball championship tournaments at the Millis Center. High Point joined the Big South in 1997 and this is its first opportunity to host the women’s basketball tournament, though it did host individual games from 2003-06. “We could not be more pleased and excited to be hosting the 2009 and 2010 Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Tournaments at High Point University,” said High Point Athletics Director Craig Keilitz. “This is a tremendous opportunity for us to highlight the extraordinary transformation that the University has made over the last three years, while also allowing us to showcase the remodeling that is currently happening inside the Millis Athletic Center.  We are thrilled that our women’s basketball team will have the opportunity to play on their home floor for the chance to participate in the excitement of the NCAA Basketball Tournament.” … The Mid-American Conference will hold its 2008 baseball tournament at a neutral site for the first time since 1982. The event is scheduled for May 21-24 at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The stadium is the home of the Chillicothe Paints of baseball’s Frontier League. 

Miscellaneous: Several Division I football programs will host bone marrow registry drives this spring. The drive will collect samples from a cheek swab to test and register people for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. Northeastern, Villanova, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire will all participate in conjunction with their spring games.  Also holding drives will be Temple, Pennsylvania, Harvard, Rhode Island andWagner … Virginia Tech junior Drew Weaver and Alabama senior Michael Thompson are competing in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club this week. Both are competing as amateurs, along with former Oklahoma State student-athlete Trip Kuehne.  Weaver earned his bid by winning the 2007 Birtish Amateur Championship in Lancashire, England. Thompson placed second in the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship to secure his berth (the winner of the tournament turned professional).
