Arizona won the Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships team title this weekend, finishing well ahead of second-place Auburn to prevent the Tigers from winning their sixth title in seven years.

The Wildcats totaled 484 points during the three-day meet, while Auburn had 348. Stanford, Texas A&M and California rounded out the top-five team finishers.

Arizona bounced back after losing the lead in last year’s championship on the final day of competition. Head coach Frank Busch says last year’s folly made this year’s victory all the more sweet.

I just think it was a terrible disappointment to lose the title last year on the last day,” said Busch, who was named this year’s coach of the meet. “This team has had a lot of time to think about that. They’ve been talking about winning this championship for a year. They have been thinking about this meet for a long time.”

Arizona dominated the relays, using its overall depth to win all five team events. Lacey Nymeyer was a member of four winning relays, while Lara Jackson and Taylor Baughman were part of three victorious teams.

Jackson and Nymeyer were also responsible for Arizona’s two individual titles, as the duo dominated the freestyle sprints. Jackson won the 50 with a time of 21.69 seconds, while Nymeyer won the 100 in 47.50.

Florida’s Caroline Burckle headlined an exciting first day at the championships, as the sophomore broke an 18-year-old meet record in the 500-yard freestyle. Burckle won the event in 4 minutes, 33.60 seconds, breaking the previous mark set in 1990 by four-time Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans.

Burckle, who was named swimmer of the meet, also captured the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 1:43.10. Teammate Gemma Spofforth won the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke titles with times of 51.78 and 1:50.70, respectively.

Two other records were broken on the first day of competition, as Oregon State’s Saori Haruguchi won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.02. Haruguchi broke the mark set last year by Stanford’s Elaine Breeden.

“I knew if I gave it my all I could do it,” Haruguchi said. “I trusted my strokes and I had fun.”

The other meet record was established by Arizona’s 200-yard freestyle relay team, which broke the record it established at last year’s championship.

Southern California’s Rebecca Soni won a pair of titles, claiming the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. Michigan’s Emily Brunemann won the meet’s longest race, claiming the 1,650-yard freestyle title in 15:53.69.

Ava Ohlgren won the only individual title for second-place Auburn with a victory in the 200-yard individual medley. Stanford’s Julia Smit won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:02.41. Tennessee’s Christine Magnuson won the 100-yard butterfly in 50.70 seconds.

Three competitors won diving events at the meet, as Hawaii’s Emma Friesen won the one-meter, Ohio State’s Chelsea Davis won the three-meter and Miami (Florida) diver Brittany Viola claimed the platform championship. Friesen, Davis and Viola shared diver of the meet honors, while Ohio’s State’s Vince Panzano was named diving coach of the meet.
