The Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet will review regional realignment proposals in men's and women's track and field during its February 5-6 meeting in St. Louis.

Cabinet members are trying to find the best solution to the current disparity in the Midwest and West regions.

The Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee has studied the situation since concerns began surfacing over the current alignment in 2003. At the cabinet's last meeting in September, members approved realignment in the East and Mideast regions. Debate has continued, though, about how to align the Midwest and West regions.

The track and field committee cited an example from 2007 in the 200-meter dash in which competitors in the Midwest, Mideast and East regions ran in preliminary rounds of four or more heats to reach the finals. In the West, though, only eight runners entered the race, and there was no preliminary-round competition.

A map with the locations of all institutions sponsoring track and field will be provided to cabinet members so they can see where natural alignments would best occur.

Another highlight on the agenda centers on the NCAA Wrestling Committee's plan to revise its selection criteria for the Division I championships. The plan calls for the elimination of historical data in the allocation process and an emphasis on results in the regular season.
