The Division I Administration Cabinet has devised a set of principles it will follow in making appointments to all the division’s committees, taking into account diversity concerns expressed during the reorganization of the governance structure and acknowledging that the Leadership Council will also be studying the recruitment process.

The issue of adequate representation for all constituencies in the NCAA (specifically gender, ethnicity and position) was raised during the reorganization, and the Leadership Council has been assigned the task of ensuring diversity within the governance structure. The cabinet must also consider conference representation in its appointments.

Wanting to set clear guidelines for future appointments, the Administration Cabinet developed guiding principles to help it make appropriate appointments, taking into account a variety of core principles, including diversity.

The cabinet will:

·         Appoint the most qualified individual nominated for a committee based on the committee’s legislated requirements.

·         Commit to enhancing the level of diversity serving on Division I and Association-wide committees from a gender, ethnicity and position perspective.

·         Be sensitive to the history of conference representation and seek to ensure a balanced approach to the appointment process so that each multisport conference is provided adequate opportunities to serve on committees.

·         Strive to identify and cultivate new nominees.

·         Encourage conferences to nominate only one individual for a committee vacancy, except for those instances when a committee is seeking nominees with distinct backgrounds.

These guiding principles will be applied to all committee appointments, including sport committees. They will be adjusted as the process begins to work and modified according to standards developed by the Leadership Council.

The appointment process is overseen by the Division I Board of Directors. Nominations are made through conference offices.
