Bowling Green 'packs the house'

Bowling Green provided an example of how the NCAA-based "Pack the House" initiative can affect attendance at women's basketball games.

On January 12, the Falcons treated the 3,010 in attendance at Anderson Arena to a 60-45 victory over Ohio University. The turnout marked a season high for Bowling Green, and it was also the largest crowd to see the Falcons play since 3,268 attended a women's game on March 5, 1994.

The Falcons' large attendance was part of the NCAA’s "Pack the House Challenge," an ongoing nationwide women’s basketball attendance competition taking place through February 17. Nearly 80 percent of the nation’s Division I women’s basketball programs signed up to participate in the competition, including most every school in the Mid-American Conference, of which Bowling Green is a member.

nullThe premise for each participating institution is to select a game/date and attempt to break the program's single-game all-time or 2006-07 season record.  Based on results, 32 conference champions and one overall national champion will be determined by the NCAA.

Entering the game, Bowling Green's all-time single-game women’s basketball attendance mark was 4,408, set on March 17, 1993, when the Falcons dropped a 69-67 decision to Florida in an NCAA tournament game.  The regular-season single-game mark was 4,013 for a February 19, 1992, overtime loss to rival Toledo.

With the addition of the Falcon Club hospitality area in Anderson Arena this season, the building’s seating capacity was reduced from 4,700 to 3,700. Since fewer seats were available, the Falcons attempted to break its 2006-07 season single-game attendance mark of 2,323, which was set last February 4 against Toledo.

"There’s no doubt in my mind we have some of the best women’s basketball fans in the nation, and they certainly showed that," said Brian Delehoy, Bowling Green’s assistant athletic director for marketing. "This was an opportunity for us to really celebrate our fans as part of a nationwide competition -- mission accomplished
