The Division I Board of Directors appointed new members to the Committee on Academic Performance, the Committee on Infractions and the Infractions Appeals Committee.

The new CAP members represent an expansion of the committee. The group will begin hearing appeals of the third- and fourth-occasion historically based penalties this winter. The expansion is necessary to ensure that each institution receives a fair hearing with an appropriately representative body.

Added to the CAP roster are Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Southland Conference; John Morriss, senior associate athletics director at Washington; and Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

The Board also extended the term of CAP Chair Walter Harrison, president of Hartford, through 2010 and named Melvin Johnson, president of Tennessee State, as vice chair.

The new infractions members are Britton Banowsky, commissioner of Conference USA; Melissa Conboy, associate director of athletics at Notre Dame; Jackie Campbell, associate commissioner of the Atlantic-10; and John Black, an attorney and adjunct law professor at UMKC.

Jack Friedenthal, law professor and former dean at George Washington, will serve on the infractions appeals committee. He was an infractions committee member for nine years.
