Division II

Skill-instruction proposal primed for Convention vote

Again tackling the question of permitting out-of-season skill instruction in sports other than football, the Division II Management Council recommended that delegates to the 2008 Convention choose to continue to limit instruction to four student-athletes at a time or to allow flexibility depending on the number of starters required to field a team.

The Council also backed a proposal to eliminate text messaging to prospective student-athletes, unless the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent or the institution’s written offer of financial aid or admission.

Division III

Council supports limits    on male practice players

The Division III Management Council formally recommended a proposal for the 2008 Convention to limit how often and how many male practice players may be used at Division III schools, but also suggested that the Presidents Council should consider ways to lead the membership in deciding whether the use of male practice players is philosophically appropriate.

The Council also agreed to support requiring the presence at games and practices of at least one coach certified in first aid, CPR and use of an AED, and a proposal to ban the use by Division III coaches and other athletics personnel of text messaging and other technology to contact recruits.
