Division I

Governance panel offers plan to change structure

The Division I Management Council’s governance subcommittee has revised and updated concepts for remodeling the Division I structure, including changes in the way diversity requirements would be met.

The Board of Directors charged the subcommittee with reviewing the structure nearly two years ago and recommending changes that would better position the presidents to move the Division I agenda. After gathering feedback from the current Division I governance bodies and the membership as a whole, subcommittee members believe they have assembled a plan that works for all constituencies — and one that can be implemented within 18 months.

The latest idea calls for the current 49-member Management Council to be replaced with two 31-member groups called the Leadership Council and Legislative Council. In addition, the current Championships/Competition and the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinets would be replaced by a 31-member Championships/Sports Management Cabinet and five 21-member cabinets covering the following areas: administrative; academic; recruiting, athletics personnel issues and pre-enrollment issues; student-athlete benefits; and amateurism.

NCAA staff

Injury Surveillance System director honored by NATA

Randall Dick, NCAA associate director of research and Injury Surveillance System, has been selected as one of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s 2007 Honorary Members.

The award recognizes outstanding dedication and service to the athletic training profession and the NATA. Dick is one of only four recipients of the award in 2007.
“Dedication, innovation, loyalty and leadership are common traits among NATA Honorary Members,” said NATA Executive Director Eve Becker-Doyle. “Those who receive the honor serve as role models to their peers and to certified athletic trainers.”

“Randy is richly deserving of the award,” said NATA Honors and Awards Committee Chair Rochel Rittgers. “He has dedicated his career to the betterment of the athletic training profession and providing quality health-care services.”

Dick, who joined the NCAA national office staff in 1987 and has directed efforts since 2003 to develop a Web-based injury data collection system, will be honored June 29 during NATA’s 58th annual meeting and clinical symposia in Anaheim, California.
